The Center for Marketing Research (CMR) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is proud to announce that Heavyweight Champion, Larry Holmes will be the celebrity speaker at their 11th Annual Celebrity/ Scholarship Dinner on April 6, 2011 at the Venus de Milo Restaurant in Swansea, Ma.

Holmes held the WBC Heavyweight title from 1978 thru 1983, winning his first 48 fights. He defended his title 20 times against greats like Ken Norton, Muhammad Ali, Gerry Cooney, and Tim Witherspoon. Only Joe Lewis has defended more titles with 25 wins. Holmes is ranked as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time, and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Born in Cuthbert, Georgia, Holmes is one of twelve children. At the age of 5, Larry and his family moved to Easton, Pennsylvania where he would earn the nickname, “The Easton Assassin”. Holmes proved very early on he was a force to be reckoned with. He started his amateur career at age 19. His amateur career record includes 19 wins, and 3 losses. At the age of 22, Larry became the sparring partner for Muhammad Ali. Two years later, Holmes began his Professional Heavyweight career.

Holmes became an overnight sensation by winning fights like the one against Ken Norton on June 9, 1978. This fight showed Larry’s unyielding determination, and would prove him to be a true heavyweight champion. Through this fight, Holmes’ left jab would also become an iconic piece of boxing history, and an inspiration to fighters for years to come.

Very rarely would Holmes turn down a fight. His streak of 48 straight wins, and his 71/2 years with the title made him a “Champ” of the Heavyweight industry. Even when many thought Holmes should retire, he continued to box. Contenders included Mike Tyson, Ray Mercer, Evander Holyfield, Oliver McCall, Brian Nielson, and Maurice Harris. At an age when many fighters could not comprehend getting back in the ring, Larry continued and recaptured 2 more WBC titles.

This is an exceptional opportunity to get up close and personal with a true boxing legend.  There will be a separate VIP Reception, which allows attendees to meet and greet with Holmes. There is a limit of 80 tickets for the VIP Reception which are $75.00 each and will be hosted at 5:00pm immediately prior to the 6:00pm dinner at the Venus de Milo in Swansea. Guests will enjoy a full course dinner and will have the opportunity to hear Larry Holmes speak about his life and career experiences. Holmes will also be presenting the scholarship awards. Dinner tickets are $75.00 each. Pictures/posters will be available for purchase at both events.

You can be a part of this unique event. Buy tickets as a holiday gift for any sports fan, donate a scholarship and take the stage with Mr. Holmes as it is awarded, or purchase an ad in the keepsake program.  To purchase tickets, or obtain more information, please contact Ava Lescault by phone at 508-910-6435 or email to alescault@umassd.edu

Troy Brown Inspires Young Scholars at 10th Annual Umass Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research Celebrity/Scholarship Dinner!

On March 30, 2010, Troy Brown was the Keynote speaker at our 10th Annual Celebrity/Scholarship Dinner hosted at the Venus de Milo in Swansea, Ma.

The evening started off as most events involving Troy Brown do. He spent time meeting fans, taking pictures, and signing autographs. However, his presence at the dinner grew into much more.

The dinner began with speeches from a variety of community leaders. Dr. Nora Ganim Barnes, the event coordinator and Center Director, spoke with much admiration and thanks for Brown’s presence at the dinner. Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Jean MacCormack, and Dean of the Charlton College of Business, Dr. Susan Engelkeymeyer, spoke with much praise for the football legend. Brown was also presented with several gifts from the Umass community and political leaders. Following the introductions, Troy handed out 22 scholarship awards, taking a picture and shaking the hands with each individual winner.

Following the ceremony guests had the pleasure, and honor, of listening to Brown discuss his life and career experiences. He talked about how a $500 scholarship helped lead him to the career stardom he experienced with the New England Patriots. He talked about the challenges he faced in his early life, and the lessons he learned that inspired him to work hard and take advantages of opportunities. Brown shared intimate details about his family, and the life he led previous to being a football phenomenon. His first job consisted of loading watermelons on large trucks in South Carolina during the sweltering summer months.

“While most kids used the money to go out, mine went toward electric and water bills at home” Brown mentioned of his earnings. This only reinforced Brown’s image as a hard worker who never turned down an opportunity to contribute.

It was toward the end of his speech that Brown truly humbled himself. He spoke of his career failures and mistakes, and how those experiences only encouraged him to work harder. He urged the scholarship winners to do the same.

“Take the ball, and run. You are going to fumble at times, and make mistakes. But just pick the ball back up, and run with it.”

Brown’s speech, filled with humor and inspiration, ended with a roaring applause and a standing ovation. Troy’s words resonated with not only the scholarship winners, but the 300 other community members who were in attendance.

The evening was a huge success for everyone involved, and preparations have already begun for next year! Be sure to check back to hear about details for next year.

In other news, the Center for Marketing Research is accepting looking for companies interested in working with our Marketing Research program. Please stay tuned to the blog for more information about our program!
