Why is Twitter Selling Tweets? Center for Marketing Research featured in recent Time article

timeHappy Friday! Today we are featuring an article that features the Center for Marketing Research at UMass Dartmouth. As twitter is preparing for its initial public offering, there have been many thoughts popping up about the company selling promoted tweets and other ways that they may generate revenue. It is now known to many that Twitter has been selling users tweets to companies. This data is a huge revenue for the company, as the Time article states that $32 million was generated in only the first half of this year solely from selling their users’ tweets.

So why are these companies paying for all of this data? Dr. Nora Barnes from the Center for Marketing Research at UMass Dartmouth states that companies are trying to find out who their main users are, what they say about the companies, and how to find them. All of this information is valuable to these companies as they are look for new ways to reach out to their customer base.
