Exxon Enters the Blogosphere…(finally!)

Over the past several years, the Center for Marketing Research (CMR) has conducted a longitudinal study of blogging by America’s nationally ranked Fortune 500 companies. One of the top companies ranked every year is Exxon Mobil. Just as they have been ranked in the top 10 each year, they have also been one of last companies to blog as a means of social media marketing. However, as of June 14, 2010, Exxon has finally joined the fast growing trend. Exxon’s Vice President of Public and Government Affairs, Ken Cohen, launched the new blog “ExxonMobil’s Perspectives Blog“.

Posting on regular basis, the theme of the blog focuses on big oil and the current events that unfold around the industry. Recent posts include the decisions of Congress and its potential effect on the oil industry, Exxon’s response to the BP oil spill, and preparing for hurricane season.

The launch of ExxonMobil’s blog has caused quite the stir among the blogging community. Many bloggers are making the assertion that Exxon merely started the blog in response to the oil spill in the Gulf, which essentially has turned the negative media off of Exxon and onto BP. Whether or not this is true, here at CMR we’d like to say Welcome to the Blogosphere Exxon. It’s about time.
